Research Interests:
Solid oxide technologies at
elevated temperatures are very promising
to provide low-cost and high-efficiency
distributed products such as hydrogen
and electricity. Based on
his knowledge and expertise in high
performance ceramics, solid oxide
fuel cells (SOFCs), and materials
science, Dr. Cheng's research interests
at PEER center extend to fuel processing
and SOFC system innovation.
Projects of interest include:
(1) Hydrocarbon conversion such
as oxidation or decarboxylation.
Issues such as exploring non-conventional
catalysts (e.g., rare earth oxides,
solid solution oxides and complex
oxides), oxidants, and media (e.g.,
ionic liquids) will be systematically
addressed.
(2) Hydrogen production separation.
Gas separation reactors using innovative
materials such as proton/electron
conducting ceramic membranes will
be developed. Specific optimization
is focused on reactor shape design
(planar vs. tubular), carbon and
sulfur tolerant catalysts, and sealing
technology.
(3) New fuel cell system integration.
This project aims to integrate the
newly developed hydrocarbon conversion/separation
technologies into the existing SOFC
power systems. The compatibility,
reliability, durability as well
as manufacturability and cost, which
are all critical factors in meeting
the ultimate goal of commercialization,
will be evaluated.
